Our lovely Aubrey is teaching our very first (and long awaited) ceramics intensive, “Clay in Practice,” from May 14th to June 18th at our Williamsburg location!

This is a 6-week ceramic journey designed to not only dive deeper and build confidence in clay, but also help you find fellow clay lovers. In true Drawing Room style, this intensive even includes a dinner and a showcase! We’re expecting this to sell out, so don’t wait to enroll!

For the Love of Drawing- Wed, April 23

Ever tried drawing with your eyes closed? Or without looking at the paper (blind drawing)? There are so many ways to draw that aren’t about accuracy (though we get to that too). Try changing your relationship to drawing with new techniques and free up opportunities to incorporate art back into your daily life!

Experiment with multiple professional-grade drawing materials (pencils, ink, color) with guidance from a practicing artist.

Volunteer-Led Events: Poetry Off Paper - Sun, April 27

Let your poems come off the paper in this open mic event designed to create a supportive space for poets to perform their writing. Come share your work or just listen to others!

Conversations in Paint: Magical Item - Sat, May 10

This watercolor workshop will introduce a variety of techniques such as wet on wet, wet on dry, flat wash, and gradients which we’ll use to paint our magical objects that conjure a memory, an emotion, or transports us to a place and time.

Pocket Art: Artist Trading Cards - Fri, May 23

Create tiny art! Decorate all types of playing cards with our large array of crafting and collaging supplies, then trade with fellow crafters. Build your little art card collection, discover new styles, and make friends!

Team Member Spotlight

Every month, Drawing Room likes to shout out one of our many team members who help bring our mission and vision to life. This month, we are highlighting the amazing Ayaka! 

Ayaka Takao (she/they) is one of our ceramics instructors and an artist combining ceramics, painting, and written word based in Brooklyn, NY. Raised in Honolulu, Hawai’i, they aim to carry an island mentality regardless of the weather outside. Largely interested in ideas of self-actualization and eudaimonia, their practice serves as a counter-offer to the contemporary state of isolation and self-serving hedonism.

Community as a Part of Creative Living: Crafting Your Spot in the Commune

You feel it. I feel it. Community feels both scarce and like something people are desperately clinging on to. It is crucial at this height of the loneliness epidemic with only more uncertain days ahead of us. Yet, how do we find the communities we feel at home in and what does it mean to be a part of a community?

Drawing Room was never  just an art space. At its core, it’s about building a broader community through creative living. Creative living is a philosophy of expansion, getting out of your comfort zone, and pushing the limits of what you thought you could do—which we find to be much easier with the support and company of others. That’s why we have a space for it. Although, you’re probably already engaging in creative living through community in more ways than you realize. Think of an early 20th century French salon throwing groundbreaking ideas around through conversation. Think of a good yap session with your friend over brunch (the one that convinced you it was time to start a podcast). Think of hosting a dinner party where the preparation, seating arrangements, decor, menu (and god forbid the theme!) all demand creative energy! Think of all the games that force you to exercise your imagination like Cards Against Humanity and Charades.
